Q. How do I use my new phone?
A. Below are links to on line tutorials on the new phones. We will have 3 different models of Cisco phones in the department. Please select the tutorial that matches your phone.There may be some features the we don't have. We will pass that information on as we receive it. These models are 7911g, 7940g, and 7960g. In addition we have a helpful hints pdf for using VOIP phones.
Q. How do I change my password?
A. The Department of Psychology now uses your Gatorlink username as the Psychology username. To change your password log into the MyUFL website and follow the instructions under My Account.
Q. How do I add a network printer?
A. Click Start=>Printers and Faxes
Click "Add a printer"
Click Next
Select "A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer"; Next
Select "Find a printer in the directory"; Next
In the name field type in "psy-" for Psychology printers or "lab-" for Faculty printers.
Click "Find Now"
From the list that appears, double click on the printer you want to use
Select "Yes" or "No"; Next
Finish
Q. How do I setup and use the Departmental Letterhead?
A. To set up the letterhead:
Start MS Word
From the menu select File => Open
Open s:\letterhead\ Departmental Letterhead.dot
From the menu select File => Save As...
The filename should be Departmental Letterhead.dot
The save location should be template. If it is not change the save in: location to:
"C:\documents and settings\<Your User Name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates"
If you have the previous letterhead it will ask if you want to replace it. Click Yes
Close document
To use the letterhead:
Start MS Word
From the menu select File => New
On the right click on "On my computer..."
Select Departmental Letterhead.dot
Edit the document and save it normally.
Q. The text in Internet Explorer 7 looks horrible. How can I fix it?
A. This is because IE7 enabled ClearType by default and normally causes problems with LCD Montiors.
Open IE7
Open Tool Menu
Click Internet Options
Click Advanced Tabs
Under Multimedia, clear the Use ClearType checkbox
Click OK two times
That should do it.
Q. Can I take a piece of computer equipment home to do some work?
A. Any equipment that was bought from UF funds or from grant funds from a grant awarded to UF, it is UF property. An off campus agreement form *must* be approved and signed by department chair before it can leave the building. See the property manager in room 114 to request the off campus agreement form.
Q. Is the computer lab available for general use?
A. The computer lab's primary purpose is as teaching lab. It is also used for subject pool data collecting. During times when the fore mentioned activities are not happening, the lab can be used by faculty and grad students. The hours are 7:00 to 4:00. No food or drink rules apply.
Q. Can I leave my computer running over night?
A. No. There are two big reasons that computers should not be left running over night. Security, and health of the computer. Unattended computer present a host of security problems, including data loss, data theft, viruses, worm, privacy issues, and such. Also, heat is a computers enemy. Leaving the computer running for long periods of time can shorten the life of the computer, and waste electricity.
Q. Can I bring in my own personal computer or laptop to use in my office?
A. Yes, the building is part of the UF wireless system. You will need to provide a wireless card and use your gatorlink username and password to connect to the network. The Psychology IT staff does not monitor the wireless network. The Computer Networking Services (CNS) monitors trafic on the wireless network for security purposes. If your computer is infected with a virus or has improper network traffic you will receive an email from CNS. They will know your email address as you have authenticated to the wireless network with your gatorlink account.
Q. Why do undergrads using computers in the department need to have computer accounts?
A. The University is trying very hard to insure that anyone using a computer on campus authenticates with an account. This process is necessary to help keep the network secure. Remember. Whoever is logged on at the time of an incident is the responsable party.
Q. Where do I get the forms needed for a network account?
A. The account creation forms have moved to an online application form. You can access it by selecting Employee Information/Computer Support on the Psychology web site menu. The click on the new account link. Or you can reach it directly from this link. You will need to be a faculty, staff, or graduate student of the Department of Psychology to get an account. Research assistants can also sign up for accounts, but the faculty supervising the lab will have to email IT Support to confirm the account creation.
Q. How much space and what can I store on the file server?
A. Grad students start with 100 megs of space. Faculty start with 300 megs of space. The purpose of this space is for current data only. Programs are not to be stored. Rule of thumb is that if you are not going to be using the data during the current semester, archive the files to CDrom and remove the files from the server. You and always added the files back if find you need them available on the server.
Q. Can I store data or program files on the web server?
A. No. To keep the web server running efficiently, only current web page files are to be store. Rule of thumb is that if the files on the web server are not going to be accessed during the current semester, archive the files to CDrom, remove the links from your web page and remove the files from the web server.
Q. What are appropriate types of emails to send to any of the Psychology Listservs?
A. Please, only send Psychology department professional business email to the listserv. It is NOT appropriate to send non-departmental emails to the list. Example of non-appropriate emails would include: sales of any kind, politically motivated, non departmental party announcements, and such. Remember, the propose of the listservs are to provide a spam free means of delivering departmental emails. Please never give our listserv addresses to anybody outside of the department.
Q. What Instant Messenger software can I have installed on the computer in my office?
A. As instant messengers are often updated to reduce security risks we recommend using web based instant messenger services. These do not require software installation so you can use it on any computer.

Q. What happens to my GatorLink account after I graduate or leave UF?
A. The policies regarding GatorLink accounts changes from year to year. To read the current policies you will need to visit UF Computing Help Desk's web page on the subject or call 392-HELP (4357).
Q. I need a zip program installed on the computer in my office?
A. The Department of Psychology now uses the native zip capibilities that are in Windows XP.
