Q: How and when do I register for classes?

A.   Registration is usually done through the online student record system ISIS. Students should register themselves as soon as they are assigned a registration time through ISIS for all non-departmentally controlled courses.

Any Psychology course that is departmentally controlled requires assistance in registration. Complete the Graduate Registration Form.

If you wish to enroll in a non-Psychology course that is departmentally controlled, you will need to contact the department that controls the course to request permission to register.


Q: What are the fee payment deadlines and consequences for missing those deadlines?

A.   Fee deadline information can be found on the University of Florida Registrar’s Office website. It’s included in the Academic Calendar. Non-payment of fees by the posted deadline will result in financial penalties being assessed to your account and possibly registration holds.


Q. What are the requirements for registration if I have an assistantship?

A.   The reqirements are listed in this pdf document.


Q. What are the requirements for registration if I do not hold an assistantship?

A.   To remain an active student, you must register for at least 1 credit hour each semester. To remain eligible for financial aide, you must register for a minimum of 3 credits in Fall and Spring and 2 credits in Summer.


Q. What if I need a leave of absence due to health difficulties or a personal problem?

A.   Any student who does not register at UF for a period of 1 term or more needs prior written approval from their advisor for a leave of absence for the designated period of time. A copy of this approval must be given to the Graduate Program Assistant and put on file in the graduate office. If the leave lasts for more than 1 year, the student must reapply for admission on return.


Q. When do I need to set up a supervisory committee?

A.   The student’s supervisory committee should be appointed as soon as possible after the student is admitted to the Graduate School, and no later than the second term of graduate study.


Q. What are the course requirements for graduation?

A.   Course requirements vary for the area and department. The last semester before graduation, a student must be registered for a minimum number of credits (3 credits Fall or Spring and 2 credit in Summer). Master's students must be registered for 3 credits of PSY6971 - Master's Research and Doctoral Students must be registered for 3 credits of PSY 7980 - Dissertation Research.


Q. What is needed for completion of the masters degree?

A.   Unless otherwise specified, for any master's degree, the student must earn at least 30 credits as a graduate student at UF. No more than 9 of the 30 credits (earned with a grade of A, B+, or B) may be transferred from institutions approved for this purpose by the Dean of the Graduate School. At least half of the required credits (not counting 6971) must be in the major. To determine the specific courses that you should take to meet departmental requirements, consult with your advisor, area director, and supervisory committee.


Q. What are the deadlines for completing my qualifying exam?

A.   All Ph.D. candidates must take the qualifying examination which includes both a written component and an oral defense. It may be taken during the third term of graduate study beyond the bachelor's degree or later. The student must be registered in the term the qualifying examination is given. Each program area in the department has its own procedures for completion of the qualifying exam. Students should consult with their advisors and doctoral committee concerning the content and procedures for this exam.


Q. What is needed for completion of the doctoral degree?

A.   The Ph.D. degree requires at least 90 credits beyond the bachelor's degree. _All master's degrees counted in the minimum must be earned in the last 7 years._ All Ph.D. candidates must take the qualifying examination. Each doctoral candidate must prepare and present a dissertation that shows independent investigation and that is acceptable in form and content to the supervisory committee and to the Graduate School. The work must be of publishable quality and must be in a form suitable for publication, using the Graduate School's format requirements. After submitting the dissertation and completing all other degree requirements (but no earlier than the term before the degree is awarded) the candidate is given a final examination, oral or written or both, by the supervisory committee, on campus.


Q. What do I do to establish Florida residency?

A.   Applicants are required to demonstrate legal ties to the State of Florida for the preceding 12 months prior to the start of classes and to relinquish those legal ties from other states that cannot be held concurrently. Generally, these primary documents include a Florida driver's license, car registration, voter's registration and county declaration of domicile. Q. How do I know if I am performing satisfactorily for my graduate program?

A.   Your area director will complete an annual evaluation of your progress in the program.
