Developmental Area Requirements for the Ph.D.

Requirement Course and Description
Weekly Seminar – required participation each semester Current Research in Developmental Psychology – Presentations by faculty, students, and guests.
Developmental Core Courses – required completion in first two years DEP 6057 | Advanced Developmental Psychology I Cognitive Development – This course surveys theories and current literature in cognitive development, focusing on the period of infancy through adolescence
DEP 6058 | Advanced Developmental Psychology II Social Development – This course surveys theories and current literature in social development, focusing on the period of infancy through adolescence
DEP 6406 | Advanced Adulthood and Aging – This course provides an overview of the major theories and research in aging including both cognitive and social aspects of adulthood and aging
* DEP 6799 | Research Methods in Developmental Psychology – This course surveys current research methods, including experimental and naturalistic-observational techniques and various research designs particularly relevant to development.
* Students may waive this course if they take CLP6527 & CLP6528 with Dr. Masiske. Any other course or instructor substitution must be approved by the Area Director.
Advanced Research DEP 6059 or DEP 6409, or can be met by PSY 6905 – Students must enroll in at least 6 credits of advanced research. This would typically involve one of the developmental research seminars with revolving topics, DEP 6059 or DEP 6409, or can be met by PSY 6905
