Typical Course Sequence & Requirements for Degree Progress

Developmental core courses must be completed in the first two years, and it is highly recommended that students complete their statistics courses in the first two years. The recommended course sequence provides a great deal of flexibility for students with respect to when they enroll in distribution courses ("outside courses") and advanced research. In addition to these recommended courses for fall and spring, it may be possible for students to complete specialized statistics courses or distribution courses in the summer (summer offerings are highly variable). The developmental core courses and required statistics classes are not usually offered in the summer. Many students also enroll in general graduate research credits or masters or dissertation credits during the summer session.

This chart also provides a description of both recommended dates and required deadlines for progress for developmental graduate students. Students should work toward completion of all activities by the recommended date. Students remain in good standing as long as they complete each activity by its final deadline. It is assumed that students and their faculty advisors will have an ongoing dialog about the importance of complying with these recommendations for progress in the developmental graduate program.

Footnote: *Absolute deadlines are provided for the end of the semester specified. For example, if a deadline is listed as Year 2, Fall, this means that all students must complete that activity by the end of the fall semester of their second year; if the first day of the spring semester arrives and the critical activity has not been completed by a student, that student’s status within the program will automatically be changed. Any students who do not meet required deadlines will be notified of the following: 1) their progress is unsatisfactory, 2) continued funding is in jeopardy, and 3) the faculty will meet to evaluate whether they should be terminated from the developmental graduate program. At this meeting, any special circumstances and/or petitions will be considered. For example, a student who has been steadily conducting and writing research articles or a student with major health problems could petition for an exception.

These deadlines are intended for students who begin the program with no prior masters research completed. Any student who is not intending to complete a masters thesis still must complete masters-equivalent research in line with these deadlines, before moving on to doctoral-level work. Students who enter the program with a master’s degree will need to set individual deadlines in consultation with their advisor and the director of graduate training in developmental psychology.
