Developmental Psychology
Development Across the Lifespan
The Ph.D. Qualifying Exam
The Developmental Area has no additional requirements for the qualifying exam than those provided in the Departmental Requirements. It is important to review the Departmental Requirements well in advance of the qualifying exam. All students must submit a program of study. The content of the exam in Developmental Psychology is based on demonstrating mastery of core topics in development and topics related to the student's research goals. Students work with their advisers and their supervisory committee to develop an individualized reading list appropriate to their goals. All students are required to be examined and to demonstrate their knowledge of this material, but the format for this exam varies from student to student. The Departmental Requirements indicate that students may either take a written exam based on their reading list or students may submit the "paper" option for the written portion of the exam. The exact nature and number of papers submitted is determined by the student and her or his doctoral supervisory committee. The written portion of the exam is followed by an oral examination given by the student's supervisory committee. Again, it is extremely important that students review the Departmental Requirements in terms of timetable for the exam and submitting materials. Also be aware of regulations established by the Graduate School regarding the number of times a student is allowed to take the exam.
