Requirements for Psychology: FAQ

Requirements for the psychology major are discussed in depth in the UF undergraduate catalog, with a direct link to the requirements found here. Frequently asked questions about the requirements are listed here:

Q: I am having trouble understanding my audit; what requirements do I have left before I graduate?
A: When you come to the Psychology Advising Office, an advisor can help you to complete a simplified checklist of your audit, which will tell you what requirements of the major you have completed and what you still need to complete. A copy of that check list can also be found here if you would like to check this on your own. You should also visit the CLAS Academic Advisement Center to check what requirements you have left for your degree that may be outside of the psychology major.

Q: If I take classes as part of a semester abroad, will they count for my psychology major?
A: Before you leave, get a course equivalencies form from the overseas study office, fill out the form, and bring it to the psychology advising office. The undergraduate coordinator will review your suggested courses and approve them if appropriate. Once abroad, if you decide to take courses different from those approved, email the undergraduate coordinator, who can give you approval while you are studying abroad. Getting approval ahead of time makes it more likely that your study-abroad courses will count toward the major.

Q: I want to take a course in Industrial/Organizational Psychology – does this department offer it?
A: No. However, there is a correspondence course in Industrial/Organization Psychology, INP4004, offered through the University of Florida's Division of Continuing Education, 392-1711. Since an equivalent course is not taught in the Psychology Department, this correspondence course will count as credit toward the psychology major. Note that correspondence courses that are offered by the Psychology Department (e.g., DEP3053, PPE3004) cannot be taken for credit in the psychology major. Correspondence courses taken other than through the Division of Continuing Education will be considered transfer credits and are subject to the rules outlined for transfer students.

Q: I want to/have to leave Gainesville for a semester. What options are available for me to get credits toward the major?
A: Available options are to take INP 4004 (a correspondence course in I/O psychology), a Psycholoy department online course, or set up a community work location (PSY 4949). For community work, make these arrangements before you leave.

Q: What are the prerequisites for PSY 3220, Communicating Psychological Science?
A: PSY 2012 and a laboratory/methods course (either PSY 3213L or a 4000-level lab are acceptable).

Q: Do I have to take the 3-credit lab before a 4-credit lab?
A: No. Taking either the 3 credit lab (PSY 3213L) or any of the 4-credit labs will satisfy your requirement for the major, as well as your general lab requirement for CLAS. Taking a 4- credit lab is recommended for those who want to pursue graduate school in psychology. However, these labs fill up quickly, so if you need a lab to graduate that semester, make sure to register for the 3-credit lab as a backup, so that you will not be prevented from graduating.

Q: Am I allowed to take both EAB3764 and EAB3002?
A: Yes. You are allowed to take both courses, but only one of them will count as Group A foundation course. The other course will be counted as a psychology elective. Make sure to take another Group A Foundation course to satisfy the major requirement.

Q: Am I allowed to take both PSB3004 and PSB3340?
A: No. You may take one OR the other.

Q: Can Stats/Math/Biology be taken S/U?
A: No.
