Brian D. Collisson

Welcome! I am currently pursuing my doctorate degree in the area of social psychology at the University of Florida. My advisor, Dr. John R. Chambers, and I are currently working on several projects relating to social projection and the faulty cognitive inference processes underlying stereotype formation. I find the cognitive and motivational processes for intergroup perception and behavior intriguing. In other (non-social psychological) words, I love studying why people infer that others are either similar or different from themselves in terms of the things that they like, traits they possess, or values that they hold. The projection of the self onto others and the reliance on stereotypical information for understanding our social world is such a fundamental human process that when I see these phenomena occurring in everyday life, I cannot help but smile and enjoy being a social psychology graduate student.

Before attending UF, I earned my B.A. from California State University, San Bernardino. My former advisor, Dr. Luis M. Rivera, and I collaborate on several projects relating to the motivational processes underlying intergroup stereotyping and prejudice. In particular, Dr. Rivera and I attempt to address the detrimental effect of self-affirmation on intergroup attitudes.
