This lab focuses on the development and refinement of behavioral assessment, behavioral treatment, and skill acquisition procedures for children with developmental disabilities, including autism. We have some studies running that involve assessment of behavior disorders, intervention for behavior disorders, and skill acquisition via shaping and chaining. Previous sources of funding for the school based research include NICHD.

We have a contract to collaborate with Heartland for Children to
teach foster and biological parents behavioral parenting skills. We are
currently evaluating the effects of this training on parenting skills,
child behavior, placement disruptions (i.e., how frequently a child
moves from one setting to another, among other measures). In addition,
we evaluate a variety of behavioral assessments and interventions for
either common child behavior problems, common behavioral interventions
(e.g., response cost versus positive reinforcement), or complex
adolescent behavior problems (e.g., running away from home).
Future directions include early prevention training for biological
parents at risk for child maltreatment. This project is a
continuation of a former contract relationship with the Florida
Department of Children and Families; the project was called the
Behavior Analysis Services Project (BASP).
As part of a contract with the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, we are evaluating assessment and treatment data and protocols for sex offenders with developmental disabilities (the Seguin Unit). In addition, we are exploring a variety of clinical interventions applicable to developmental disabilities in general.

We have a human operant lab designed to evaluate nuances of commonly used behavioral interventions, such as differential reinforcement, noncontingent reinforcement, and extinction. These laboratories were initiated through funding from NIMH.
