Two famous books on good writing style are:
Strunk and White's Elements of Style - the most popular guide to writing American English. This White was also the author of Stuart Little.
Fowler's Dictionary of Modern English Usage is the most popular guide to British English. Used copies of this book can be picked up for under $1. Fowler's older work: The King's English is available on the web.
